How is the term “son of God” even used in the bible, literally or metaphorically (symbolic of a devout servant to God)?

             References from the NT:

  • Jesus said to the people: “Blessed are the peacemakers; they will be called sons of God.” (Found in the all 4 Gospels; Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John).
  • Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am returning to MY Father AND YOUR Father, to MY God AND YOUR God.‘” (John 20:17)
  • [Jesus says to the 12 disciples]: 20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; 21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.  (John 17:20-21, King James Version)

* Note: clearly this cannot be literal because that would mean there are 14 gods!

* Thus the only oneness being described here is being one in purpose not in being.

  • Jesus reminded the Jews of their own scripture which is filled with metaphors (a person being called a “God”=God-conscious, when Jesus allegedly said “Jesus replied, “It is written in your own Scriptures that God said to certain leaders of the people, ‘I say, you are gods!’” John 10:34, New Living Translation
